Pegler, commonly known as shiitake, is one of the most important edible mushrooms in Taiwan's mushroom industry. Light serves as an environmental signal regulating fungal growth and development, yet studies examining the influence of light conditions on shiitake production remain limited. This study investigated the effects of different light intensities and light duration on shiitake production. In experiment 1, cultivation bags were exposed to light duration of 8h/16h and 16h/8h under light intensities of 20 and 100 μmol.m^(-2).s^(-1), with a no-light treatment as the control. The 8h_(20)/16h treatment produced the highest yield and fruiting bag percentage, 151% higher than the control and 97% higher than the 8h_(100)/16h treatment, with superior pileus thickness and stipe length, while no fruiting occurred under 16h_(100)/8h. In Experiment 2, under 20 μmol.m^(-2).s^(-1) light intensity, the 4h_(20)/20h treatment yielded the highest pileus fresh weight, number of fruiting bodies, and fruiting bag percentage, exceeding the 8h_(20)/16h treatment by 50%. Experiment 3 compared light intensities of 20, 60, and 100 μmol.m^(-2).s^(-1) under 4-hour illumination, and the 4h_(100)/20h treatment resulted in the lowest yield, 144% lower than 4h_(60)/20h, while no significant difference was observed between 4h_(20)/20h and 4h_(60)/20h. In Experiment 4, under the same daily light integral, continuous illumination for 4 hours (4h_(20)/20h) produced a 33.6% higher yield than intermittent illumination of 1 hour every 5 hours (1h_(20)/5h). Overall, different duration and light intensities significantly affected shiitake production, and continuous 4-hour illumination at a light intensity of 20 μmol.m^(-2).s^(-1) was optimal for fruiting body formation. |
