| 英文摘要 | In the revitalization of endangered languages worldwide, the reclamation of indigenous personal names serves as a key indicator of respect for human rights and linguistic identity. However, in contemporary Taiwan, even in interactions within Taiwanese-speaking families or in media programs conducted in Taiwanese, personal names are often pronounced in Mandarin. This study investigates the causes behind the collective loss of personal names in the Taiwanese voice. Drawing on literature reviews and interviews with Taiwanese language professionals, the author identifies five main contributing causes from the perspectives of linguistic structure and modern naming practices: (1) the low phonetic representability of Taiwanese through Chinese characters; (2) the complex and unstable phonological rules governing name pronunciation; (3) the prioritization of character form and meaning over phonetic considerations in naming; (4) the dominant use of Mandarin rather than Taiwanese during the naming process; and (5) a cultural preference for using obscure or rare characters in personal names. Symptoms related to the loss of names in Taiwanese voice include: inabilities to recognize the Chinese characters of personal names, to voice one's own name in Taiwanese, to hear one's own name when called in Taiwanese, and to efficiently process names via Taiwanese key-in method. This paper concludes that language revival in Taiwan should install proactive planning and practice for Taiwanese personal names. |
