| 英文摘要 | The phrase “a life worse than death” encapsulates the harsh reality of Ta iwan’s rapidly aging population. In response to the increasing demand for elderly care, the establishment of long-term care (LTC) institutions has grown significantly. According to data from Taiwan’s government open data platform, as of 2023 (ROC Year 112), there were 514 general nursing homes nationwide, providing a total of 44,798 beds. By January 2025, statistics from the Ministry of Health and Welfare showed that the number of elderly welfare institutions had risen to 1,050, with a combined capacity of 59,929 beds. Under the evolving concepts of “aging in place” and continuity of care, housing options for older adults have expanded beyond traditional institutional models. Contemporary choices range from luxurious nursing homes to more minimalist, home-like environments. Most current LTC facilities in Taiwan maximize spatial efficiency and emphasize infection control in their architectural design. However, a prevailing challenge remains: creating non-institutionalized environments that evoke a sense of home while ensuring epidemic safety. Designing care environments based on small-scale units offers several advantages, including enhanced privacy, personal autonomy, and reduced sensory overstimulation, which collectively contribute to improved emotional stability among residents. By implementing design strategies that emphasize smallscale layouts, zoning, and de-institutionalization, LTC institutions can strike a balance between effective infection control and a home-like atmosphere. This approach mitigates the psychological stress typically associated with hospital-style facilities, thereby promoting both the health and quality of life of elderly residents. |
