| 英文摘要 | This article reinterprets the writing of ancient Scottish history in the sixteenth century from the perspective of the history of knowledge and situates it within the context of transnational intellectual debates, analyzing its literary forms and core issues. It refers to this intellectual controversy as "the Debate of Ancient British History." For Scottish historians, this debate was a defense of Scotland's political independence and freedom. However, the construction and discourse of ancient Scottish history did not develop in isolation; rather, they evolved through opposition to and engagement with English historical writing, shaping distinctive characteristics in the process. The first section discusses the mobilization of ancient history in Scotland since the Middle Ages. The second examines the intellectual connections between sixteenth-century Scottish historians and scholars from England or continental Europe, as well as their respective positions within this debate. The third focuses on the participants' shared Renaissance scholarly background and their debates on language and textual sources. The fourth explores two key issues in the debate: the origins of island names and the process of major ethnic migrations. Rather than determining which version of ancient history is closer to historical truth, this article seeks to investigate the intellectual contexts and methods through which historians enabled ancient history to exert the "power of the past" in their own time. |
