| 英文摘要 | Liu Shipei 劉師培, a distinguished traditional scholar active during the late Qing period and early modern China, is noted for his knowledge in Chinese traditions, as well as for being a radical reformer and a capricious person. Liu’s Preface to the History of Learning in the Late Zhou (Zhou mo xueshushi xu 周末學術史序) was seen as ground-breaking in that it reflects the convergence of traditional scholarship and new knowledge introduced from Japan and Europe at that time. This article first analyzes the ideological underpinnings of the book related to Liu’s attitudes towards truth, democracy, and antiquity, revealing an underlying, coherent logic that is not explicitly stated within his work. Then, this article focuses on the viewpoints of contemporary scholars and the new interpretations of classical literature that emerged with this book, exploring the specific context in which Liu expressed his desire to blend reformation with traditionalism. Since Liu’s own thought and external trends rapidly evolved and diverged in the years following, this essay also analyzes Liu’s later statements and contrasts them with other scholars’ views in order to highlight the dilemma Liu faced in his attempt to navigate old and new perspectives. This essay concludes that Liu’s book represents one of the last high points of the so-called “New Learning” trend during the late Qing era. |
