| 英文摘要 | During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the practice of writing about gardens flourished. Beyond the garden owners themselves, literati who either visited these sites in person or engaged with them through textual "armchair travel" also played a crucial role. While the gardens still stood, their writings enriched the spatial connotations of the landscapes and enhanced their renown. In periods of decline or ruin, these same writings transformed the gardens into sites imbued with collective memory, eliciting new emotional resonances in response to changes in the physical landscape. This article focuses on how others have written about the Spring-Floating Garden of the renowned late-Ming Jiangxi literatus, Xiao Shiwei, addressing two primary questions. First, how did late Ming literati respond to the ingenious and intricate landscapes of the garden, as well as to its owner's oscillation between official service and reclusion, and his engagement with Buddhist thought-thus contributing to the widespread renown of both the garden and its owner? Second, how did the garden survive into the Ming-Qing transition and become a unique site for literati to express reflections on dynastic upheaval and to invoke collective memory, producing spatial interpretations distinct from those of the late Ming? Finally, this article traces the lingering echoes of the garden and its associated writings from the mid-Qing period onward, charting its transformation from a nationally renowned site to a local historical landmark. By examining writings on the garden by literati across different historical periods, this study offers a focused investigation into the dynamic interplay between the rise and fall of gardens and the collective identity of the literati from the late Ming era onward. |
