| 英文摘要 | Amid the resurgence of competitive authoritarianism across Southeast Asia, youth movements have re-emerged as a crucial force contesting institutional control and shaping democratic trajectories. This study conducts a comparative analysis of youth-led democratic movements in Thailand and Indonesia, exploring how young activists exhibit resilience and agency in reshaping the trajectories of their political systems. In Thailand, youth mobilization has intensified since the 2014 military coup, directly confronting the entrenched nexus of military dominance and royal authority. Despite severe institutional setbacks-such as the dissolution of the progressive Future Forward Party and the recent legal challenges against the Move Forward Party - youth activists continue to advance agendas for electoral and constitutional reform within a tightly constrained political order. In Indonesia, following the fall of Suharto in 1998, youth engagement in electoral politics, grassroots organizing, and anti-corruption campaigns has remained vibrant. Yet the persistence of systemic corruption, religious conservatism, and oligarchic patronage networks continues to undermine the process of democratic consolidation. Both countries epitomize the dynamics of competitive authoritarianism, wherein formal democratic institutions are manipulated to entrench elite power and suppress genuine competition. To transcend the linear assumptions of classical Transitology, this study introduces the conceptual model of recurrent permeation and reclosure, which elucidates how youth movements sustain political resilience and agency amid recurring cycles of institutional opening and closure. The comparative findings suggest that Southeast Asian youth movements not only expand the scope of democratic participation but also contest the structural dominance of military, dynastic, and oligarchic elites-thereby offering critical insights into the contingent possibilities and evolving pathways of democratization in the region. |
