| 英文摘要 | Coaching behaviors directly influence athlete performance; hence, exploring leadership among coaches is crucial. A leadership style with distinct characteristics often observed in Chinese culture is paternalistic leadership. Paternalistic leadership has received considerable attention in sports research but has garnered limited retrospective research attention. Accordingly, this study reviewed the literature to explore the development of paternalistic leadership within sports teams. Relevant keywords were used to search both Chinese and English databases, including EBSCO, Emerald, PsyInfo, Science Direct, Airiti Library, CNKI, Scopus, and Web of Science, for articles published between 2000 and 2023. In total, 22 articles were included in this study’s analysis. The included articles largely focused on team sports, and all articles used the same paternalistic leadership scale. Empirical evidence consistently demonstrates that paternalistic leadership significantly enhances team cohesion, team satisfaction, and athletic performance. Trust in the coach and the coach–athlete relationship partially or completely mediates the relationships between paternalistic leadership and various outcomes. Team values have a significant moderating effect on the relationship between paternalistic leadership and trust in the coach. Future studies should employ objective performance variables, including both team- and individual-level performance variables, and incorporate sport statistics to supplement the present findings. Moreover, future studies should examine differences across organizational levels, sport types, cultural contexts, and individual background factors and employ qualitative or mixed-methods designs to gain deeper insights into the effects of paternalistic leadership. |
