| 英文摘要 | The "Southern epiphany and Northern gradualism” is generally regarded as a dichotomy between the northern and southern sects of Zen School in modern academic circles, but with further research on Zen doctrines and history, the issue of “epiphany” and “gradualism” has gradually been dissolved. The relationship between “epiphany” and “gradualism” does not constitute an antithesis in terms of practice, but rather, there is an inherent consistency between the two. Huineng emphasized the importance of “epiphany” but did not oppose “gradualism” either, stressing that there is no difference between “epiphany” and “gradualism”, but rather that it is a convenient way to teach according to people's different aptitudes. Similarly, Shenxiu advocated “gradualism” but did not neglect “epiphany” either, emphasizing that “gradualism” is the basic work before “epiphany”, and that it is only through gradual cultivation to reach a certain level that one can experience an epiphany to realize the clear mind and see the way of Tao in Zen Buddhism. The difference between “epiphany and gradualism” is in fact a convenience for different audiences and different stages of practice. |
