| 英文摘要 | The "Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove" (Zhulin qixian tu 竹林七賢圖; hereinafter as "Seven Sages") is a popular theme in traditional Guangzhou architecture murals, especially in ancestral halls. In depicting the Seven Sages, southern Guangdong artisans abandoned the traditional schema from the Southern Dynasties, and instead integrated elements of literati paintings from Jiangnan, bamboo and wood carvings, paintings on Jingdezhen imperial kiln porcelains, and Qing court paintings. Various forms of the "Seven Sages" were disseminated across media and regions through the inland river trade networks established by the Qing court, with elements of Jiangnan and imperial court cultures. This was a result of the Qing court's strategy of Manchu-Han integration through the advocacy of Jiangnan culture. Between the Qianlong and the Daoguang eras, Guangzhou amassed great wealth through foreign trade. The gentry culture and art that emerged during this time continued to thrive even after the Opium War. When erecting public and commemorative buildings in villages, such as ancestral halls and clan schools, local elites in southern Guangdong chose the "Seven Sages" mural as a symbol to construct their clan identities. The elegant gathering scenes depicted in these "Seven Sages" murals reflect the literati's lifestyles and highlight the privileged status of the elites. The theme of pastoral seclusion in these murals provided justification for scholars who were unwilling or unable to pursue official careers, safeguarding their voice in local affairs. |
