| 英文摘要 | This article explores the intersection of environmental protection and religious practices in Taiwanese popular religion, particularly with regard to the burning of incense and paper money, examining their symbolic ideology and non-human agency. On July 23, 2017, massive temples of popular religion organized the "Gods March to the Ketagalan Boulevard" event to protest against the government's excessive intervention in burning incense and paper money. The article highlights that burning incense and paper money are crucial ritual media for believers to communicate with deities, embodying symbolic significance and non-human agency. However, environmental protection departments predominantly emphasizes their pollution to the environment. The author analyzes the government's proposed alternatives, such as "replacing paper money with rice," "concentrated burning," and "online worship." These alternatives have faced widespread opposition for neglecting the religious meanings and cultural context essential to believers. The article suggests that the government should respect and understand popular religion when formulating environmental protection policies and engage in thorough dialogue with temples and believers to develop more suitable environmental measures that align with their religious practices. The article emphasizes that environmental protection policies must integrate cultural and religious considerations, rather than adopting a purely scientific approache. It advocates for policymakers to understand the believers' logical framework and strike a balance between environmental protection and faith to achieve sustainable development goals. The author urges that a holistic approach, incorporating both environmental and cultural dimensions, is essential for the successful implementation of these policies. |
