| 英文摘要 | Beigang Wude Temple held a grand centennial jiao (ritual offering), spanning two stages: the myth of the deity's relocation to Taiwan and its subsequent influence on the island. The connection between these stages relied on spirit-writing (fuji). The key figure in the establishment of the temple was Chen Maolin, the elder manager, whose efforts evolved through various transformations. In the early years, there was an expectation of having all five spirit-writing paths, but after facing many practical challenges, only two paths (the Central and Southern paths) were retained. The temple hosted both public and private rituals, with the number of ritual days gradually increasing to meet the demands of various groups. The temple primarily worships the God of Wealth, and the belief has expanded from Zhao Gongming of the Central path to include the Five Gods of Wealth. The temple's ability to stand out among numerous wealth temples is due to its commitment to the salvation efforts of spirit-writing culture. This form of communication between humans and deities is classified within religious studies as mysticism, and its functions of "warning the world" and "foreshadowing" remain irreplaceable to this day, making it a local example in the field of comparative religion. The private rituals of the temple include tracing its ancestral origins back to Shandong, China. Prophecies made before the end of martial law in Taiwan eventually led to the pilgrimage after the lifting of martial law. When they discovered that the ancestral temple in Zhaoguan Town had been destroyed, they affirmed the development of the "Wude lineage" in Taiwan. This myth is not transmitted orally but is entirely verifiable through the spirit-writing texts, with remarkable and joyful events well-documented. The public rituals were confirmed by a 2022 spirit-writing text, which, during the pandemic, clarified that the primary function of the Five Plague Lords is to drive away plagues, expressing their fundamental desire to protect the people and urging them not to panic. As for the private revelations about individuals and households, though difficult to verify due to their connection to the spiritual and mortal realms, they have been of great benefit to societal and moral well-being. This narrative of the temple's development not only reflects the transplantation of the traditional belief in the native deities but also provides a model for how faith is formed and how spirit-writing serves the salvation of the people. |
