英文摘要 | Death is the invisible but concrete character in Maurice Maeterlinck’s The Intruder (1890). In the play, the character Grandfather hears its footsteps, the sound of the scythe being sharpened, and animals’ fearful actions, which embodies the special characteristics of this invisible role. It is an expected “Intruder” and “Other” coming from the outer world. As an Other who never exposes itself but deeply affects the characters in the play, it reminds the viewers of the theme in paintings, “memento mori” (remember that you will die). No matter how unexpected or unwelcome it might be, death comes in our way sooner or later, eventually ending everything. Yet, in this play, death seems to be slyer; it sneaks into the house and haunts around. It disturbs and arouses all beings, yet waits for the time to come. Facing death, people become helpless and restless. What’s worth noting is that as the play begins, death is already a part of the scene. It is not a biological state or natural condition, such as ceasing breathing, but an implication or a role that all creatures fear and avoid. Such designs show that death is never understood in the biological sense only, but the uncertainty and the unknown that are brought by death cause the fear inside people’s mind. This paper will discuss the image of death in The Intruder and reflect on the relationship between humans and this invisible other |
