英文摘要 | Thomas Merton's trip to Asia ended prematurely due to his unexpected death, and thus there was much conjecture concerning his Asian Journal. Some scholars have amplified the influence of Eastern religions on Merton, without considering the context of his own concern for monastic renewal. By reading Merton's letters, journals and lecture materials, this article traces Merton's later existential background, and his problematic focus and intellectual resources, in order to reconstruct the hidden theological context of his Asian journey. This article argues that Merton's primary concern is not the horizontal relationship among religions, but how to renew the vertical relationship between God and creation. It also shows that Merton actually attempted to restore the unique inner participatory metaphysics of early Christianity by discussing natural contemplation and symbolism. On this ground, Merton discreetly anticipated a trans-cultural communion among religions. |
