英文摘要 | Since the 1980s, numerous exceptional works of women's fiction have been published in Taiwan, inspiring a considerable amount of scholarship concerned with gender issues. This article, however, analyzes contemporary women's fiction from Taiwan, as well as its class-related aspects of gender issues, from a Marxist perspective - a somewhat lesser-used approach in studies on Taiwan literature. Firstly, this article discusses the patriarchal ideology simultaneously at work in the workplace and in the family, relegating women to a lesser remuneration for their labor than they deserve in both the public and private spheres. Next, it deals with the notion of romantic love in literary works - a theme that transcends gendered intimate feelings and responds to the hierarchy in capitalist societies. Finally, this work investigates the contradictions and mutual constraints between class consciousness and gender awareness, which often create tension between class and gender in women's fictional narratives from Taiwan. Many texts favor bourgeois, gendered subjects who are progressive, and consciously reflect on gender relations; rarely portrayed are the experiences of those subaltern women whose tendency is to compromise with or even internalize patriarchy. I argue that critical analyses of female consciousness in Taiwan fiction must take into account class issues in capitalist societies; furthermore, they must also carefully address the issue of subaltern women who may be ignored, silenced and even made to disappear amid gendered political correctness |
