英文摘要 | The question of how sentences are formed has long been under debate. In Japanese linguistics, there have been two major positions to this debate : the position that argues for single- step formation" the idea that sentences are formed through a single decisive step or condition, and the position which argues for multistep formation",the idea that sentences are formed through a number of components gradually coming together in a multi - step process. Yamada Yoshio, one of the early Japanese grammarian s to advocate a theory of sentence formation, argued that sentences are formed in a single - step process. Along with the evolution of predication theory and further developments in sentence structure analysis (especially the development of syntactical hierarchies) though, scholars after Yamada came to argue for a multi - step process in sentence formation. Recently, as new developments are made in sentence function analysis, single-step formation"theory is beginning to make a comeback and scholars are beginn ing to reevaluate Yamada’s theory, as it makes explaining single- word sentences possible. This paper argues that this shift in theory stems in the interpretation of the following two points: whether or not a sentence should be broken down into components and whether a sentence is formed upon or before its utterance. |
