英文摘要 | This study seeks to undertake an ecologically oriented criticism of Chinua Achebe’s first novel, "Things Fall Apart", that was published more than fifty years ago (1958). Up to the second decade of the 21st century, approach to the novel as such is surprisingly insufficient. Indeed, this could not be the case with an age in which the ecological awareness is gaining its ground. Nor could this neglect be the case with a literary work that devotes much space to the delineation of the pre-colonial Igbo society, an agrarian tribal community characteristic of its more spontaneous, more resilient interaction with the environment and nature. To fill the critical lacuna, therefore, the first section of this paper tries to identify the elements that both typify "Things Fall Apart" as a nature novel and characterize the Igbos as a people with an ecological mindset. On the other hand, as a writer who received a modern education, Achebe makes some revisions to the Igbo’s original understanding of nature. With theoretical help from some ecocritics and the deconstructionist Jacques Derrida, the second half of this paper will then evaluate the Igbo concept of nature in both ecocritical and deconstructionist terms. The results show that a combined application of ecocriticism and deconstruction can not only increase the validity of the related interpretations of the novel, but also produce more nuanced and comprehensive view of it. |
