英文摘要 | Readers activate existing knowledge structures (schemata) to interpret text. (Vacca & Vacca, 1986) To get EFL learners well prepared for reading, buliding learners' background knowledge is essential. The paper applies the concepts of the schema theory and Ken Goodman's psycholinguistic model to an adult ESL/EFL reading class. First, related literature that addresses the schema theory and the psycholinguistic model is reivewed. Cloze procedure (Taylor, 1953) and listening-based cloze are used as steps of pre-reading activities in a reading class for low English proficiency adult learners. Step-by-step teaching procedures are described and how the teaching goals are achieved is examined. Questionnaires from the participants after the teaching unit indicate that these pre-reading activieites are helpful in comprehending the text and make reading enjoyable to them. |
