英文摘要 | In our observable world, we see many creatures that seem weak and helpless, yet survive successfully in the highly competitive world. Though they are surrounded by much stronger competitors, they have their own winning strategy; we have observable proof in our physical world that the weak does not always succumb to the strong. Similarly, there is much more to Sun Tzu and warfare than just using size and strength to achieve results. If military affairs are simply a matter of size, what need is there for people in the ROC (the Republic of China) to learn the art or science of war? Sun Tzu tried his best to provide his originality and tried to be testable on the part of his predictability, but some of the exegeses are intriguing and contradictory to each other on the same passage. It is important for us to interpret Sun Tzu’s text correctly if the people in the ROC want to apply them in the real world. This paper argues that critical thinking and the knowledge like that of evolutionary game theory can help us better understand the payoffs with which we formulate our strategies, and provides a fresh perspective that many exegeses on Sun Tzu were not capable of providing. That is to say, with help from game theory, especially evolutionary stable, we can understand how a small force would be able to acquire survival lessons. Keeping a low profile is the most effective way to mate for either the small male elephant seals or the small forces, which is the essence of both the evolutionary game theory and Sun Tzu’s the Art of War. Sun Tzu would not conclude that the big always subdues the small, for there is indeed a David to beat a Goliath. Therefore, game theory and Sun Tzu’s strategic thinking seem different in their depth yet echo one another, for they both provide a roadmap for its applicants to choose according to the payoff after careful calculations. |
