中文摘要 | 性別與語言長久以來,均為西方社會語言學研究主要議題之一。許多研究著重於評估教材中性別歧視用語現象,及如何增進語言與性別平等。然而,臺灣專為英語為外語學習者設計之英語教材,是否已改善性別歧視用語現象呢?本論文研究三種不同版本專為臺灣英語學習者設計編纂之高中英語教科書,探討其中可能性別歧視用語現象。結果發現,性別歧視隱約可見,並真實反映華人的傳統性別價值觀。此外,佐以問卷調查,本研究發現英語教師及學生對性別歧視用語之敏感度不高,兩者意見存在明顯差異。最後,本論文提出鼓勵非性別歧視用語之可行辦法,探討以英語為外語學習環境中性別與語言相關議題。 |
英文摘要 | Language and gender have recently been one of the major issues in the western sociolinguistic research. Much attention has been directed to the assess ment of the sexism in EFL materials and the increase of the gender fairness in language. But, have the locally-designed EFL textbooks improved in the treatment of sexist language? This paper examined three popular versions of locally-designed English textbooks for senior high EFL learners in Taiwan. It was found that gender bias occurred in very subtle ways, and that language in textbooks truly reflected Chinese traditional values toward gender. A questionnaire survey was conducted to explore the responses made by both English instructors and learners. Results showed that the sensitivity to sexist language was not overwhelmingly great and that an obvious gap existed between their treatments of sexist language. This study further provided some useful methods about how to encourage the use of nonsexist language and shed new light on the issue of gender and language in the EFL context. |
