英文摘要 | Learner beliefs about language learning are not isolated; instead, they operate within an ecology of assumptions about the value of pursuing education as it relates to perceptions about themselves. Unresolved questions can create anomie, which may be misinterpreted by educators. There is room for tertiary students and educators to explore their respective existential and epistemological stance in dialog that dovetails with Vygotsky's concepts regarding motivation and autonomy as socially constructed processes involving (in particular) interaction with more competent others (see Vygotsky, 1978). This study was carried out through a two-stage action research: first, the researcher surveyed 100 students regarding various meta-issues surrounding their inner lives as it relates to education performance. Second, the researcher engaged the students in meaningful dialog about a practical book that discusses existential issues (Warren, 2007), in a regular reading and discussion group outside the classroom. The action research concluded that student motivation and academic performance improved notably (statistically significant) through time as a result of considering existential and epistemological issues in group and one-on-one dialog with the instructors, using Warren (2007) as a springboard for discussion. |
