| 英文摘要 | This essay mainly focuses on the discussion of the formal creativity of zi and some other character that use this component oracle bone and bronze vessel inscriptions as well as Chu slips. First, I review previous scholarly discussion on the character □ in oracle bone inscriptions, and conclude that □ is zi □. Then, I discuss the creative use of zi, which connects with lu 彔, suo 索 and other relevant characters. I assert that the character □ means ＂hanging pots on a rack＂ and correlates with qiehushi 挈壺氏 in the Rites of Zhou. Qiehushi has direct ties with the stationing of military camps, and hence the meaning of zi □ corresponds with ci 次, which often is explained as ＂stationing.＂ After elaborating the character's creative use, I analyze some uses from oracle bone inscriptions. Anciently, the character zi □ denoted ＂a tent,＂ such as in dajia zi-in which the da-jia spirit seats were located. Thus, oracle bone inscriptions that subsequently explained the meaning as ＂stationing,＂ in the form ＂zai 在+ place name + zi □,＂ bear an extended relationship with the above meaning of ＂tent.＂ That is, the character zi □ can be a verb (to station) or a noun (tent), which is similar to guan 館 which can be used as a noun (house) and a verb (to reside). In addition, I cite several other examples from bronze inscriptions and Chu slips. Finally, I show how the character zi □ evolved from the oracle bones to the Chu slips |
