英文摘要 | This paper presents a hermeneutic reading of the characterization of Barabas in The Jew of Malta by Christopher Marlowe. The portrayal of Barabas as a Machiavellian stems from the general misunderstanding of The Prince, written by Niccolo de Bernardo Machiavelli (1469-1527). The dramatist "misreads" The Prince in The Jew of Malta. Barabas takes no interest in attaining and maintaining political power; his blood-thirsty inclination, disagreeing totally with Machiavelli's amorality ("beyond considerations of good and evil"), develops into sheer immorality; his playful indulgence in evil contrasts sharply with Machiavelli's sincere hope for peace. Barabas ruthlessly plays with his victims but loses his subjectivity in the "game." In the light of the concept of "game" proposed by Hans Georg Gadamar in Truth and method, Barabas's loss of subjectivity can be discussed in three aspects: (1) the supremacy of the game: his failure to recognize crises beforehand indicates his lack of subjectivity in his game; (2) the game's attraction to him: his blood-thirsty inclination reveals the to-and-fro movement of the game; (3) the playfulness of the game: his profanation of religion is the most eminent carnivalization of The Prince. |
