英文摘要 | In contrast to those of the Yúan dynasty, objects from the early Ming were rarely decorated with images of human figures. Scholars typically attribute this dearth to a ban on figural décor put in place by the Hung-wu emperor. Yet this conclusion deserves reexamination, for a significant number of early Ming objects decorated in this manner do in fact survive. This paper reconsiders the impact of Hung-wu’s ban. By examining three thematic sources for the figural décor found on official wares - specifically poetry historical narratives, and moral education - the author offers an interpretation of official attitudes toward figural décor and the significance of its persistence. The essay also briefly treats the relationship between the decorative designs of official wares and the Ming painting academy. (Edited by Jeffrey Moser) |
