英文摘要 | Purpose: As an animal experimental model created for observation, barley flakes containing high level of β-glucan were used to replace part of the soluble fiber in animal feed to assess its effects on serum lipids and lipoproteins, lipoproteins in liver, and fatty liver. Method: Hamsters were divided into a total of four groups: one control group and three experimental groups (feed containing 600g, 1200g and 3000g of barley flakes, respectively). Ten male hamsters were assigned per group, and the basal feed is the high-fat diet containing 0.5% cholesterol. The experiment was conducted for 8 weeks (a group of hamsters was sacrificed at week 0 as the baseline, and the remaining animals were sacrificed at week 4 and week 8). Blood and liver samples were collected for analysis of differences in the concentrations of lipids and lipoproteins. Result: Serum sample analysis indicated that the differences in total cholesterol (TC) concentration between the control and experimental groups were -12%, -8.7% and -10.7%, respectively; the differences in triglyceride (TG) concentration of the 1200g and 3000g group were -40.3% and -17.6%, respectively. No significant difference was observed in the concentration of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) between the control and experimental groups, whereas significant differences in the concentration of low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) were found between the groups, -12.3%, -13% and -11.2%, respectively. Liver sample analysis showed that the differences in LDL-C level between the control and three experimental groups were -40%, -33% and -38.8%, respectively, and the differences were significant. Moreover, only the 1200g group showed a significant difference in the concentration of HDL-C (+114.3%) and no significant differences were observed in the remaining two groups. Conclusion: According to the results, the addition of different levels of barley flakes to the feed can lower serum TC, TG and HDL-C concentrations in hamsters with hypercholesterolemia. In addition, barley flakes have different effects on HDL-C and LDL-C levels in the liver. |
