| 中文摘要 | 本文審視語言和文化的密切關係,主張這兩方面都要教,EFL的學生才有較高的成功可能。研究者注意到,想要為文化下定義時,或要審視文化如何影響語言時,困難時常發生。資料顯示,對文化的理解,可以協助EFL學生避免難堪的錯誤,以及和外籍人士的不良溝通。本文並進一步說明,學習文化能讓臺灣的EFL學生獲得機會,發現他們對外籍人士的看法事實上常常只是偏見,而非基於事實。另外,對語言教師而言,文化教學常常出現一些問題,導致學生在教室互動裡被忽略,教師也常常無法好好處理這種情形。為了解決問題,我們鼓勵臺灣的EFL教師在教室中進行以文化為導向的遊戲,邀請目標文化演講者演講,使用網路資源和大眾媒體協助學生對英文產生興趣。我盼望臺灣的EFL學生因而獲得最好的語言教學環境。 |
| 英文摘要 | This paper examines the connection between language and culture, and sets forth the argument that EFL students need to be given instruction in both areas if they are to experience success as language learners. Attention is focused upon the difficulty faced by researchers when attempts are made to arrive at a precise definition for culture, and an examination is made into how culture influences language. Information is also presented which reveals how understanding the target culture can help the EFL student avoid making embarrassing mistakes and experiencing miscommunication when interacting with native English speakers. Furthermore, this paper shows how learning about culture gives Taiwanese EFL students an opportunity to discover that the views they hold about foreigners may actually be based on mistaken stereotypes rather than having a basis in reality. Additionally, culture teaching often creates a number of problems for the language teacher, which, in turn, has sometimes led to the subject being ignored or not being sufficiently dealt with in the EFL classroom. In order to rectify this problem, Taiwanese EFL teachers are encouraged to use in-class culure oriented games, invite guest speakers from the target culture into the classroom, and to utilize the Internet and mass media to get students interested in the subject and to ensure that their students are being given the best possible language instruction. |
