英文摘要 | The attacks of September 11 are usually regarded as the tragic consequence of a long conflict between the Islamic world and the West. The war between these two religious civilizations surely has its long history. Was the Rushdie Affair, like September 11, a modern outgrowth of the “clash of civilizations,” in the phrase of Samuel Huntington? Or was it, as Edward Said suggests, the product of a struggle within the diverse Islamic civilization. Doubtlessly, the range and force of the Rushdie Affair's impact on both the West and the Islamic world are difficult to overestimate. In this present paper, I attempt to offer a genealogical study of the multiple interpenetrating forces which produced the controversial phenomenon of what has now become the Rushdie Affair. By undertaking Nietzschean critiques of the presuppositions on both sides, I will critically probe two major conflicting, yet interesecting kinds of “will to power” which generate the innermost tension within the Rushdie controversy: the Islamic will to truth and the western will to freedom. In conclusion, I will discuss what kinds of lesson we can learn from the Rushide Affair (a clash of two religious civilizations) in our multicultural civil society. |
