英文摘要 | Twenty-two Taiwan finalists of 2005 international science fairs were followed up. The purpose of this study was to understand the characteristics of these talented youngsters and their support systems. By means of self-designed questionnaire surveys and interviews, major findings were as follows. Finalists are independent and have a deep passion of science. Interest and realization of potential were their primary motivation for conducting research. 68% of students had been in gifted classes, 73% had participated in school fairs and 86% had professors or scientists as mentors. They were well supported by teachers as well as parents (96%). Most students chose physical science research projects (73%), but they chose applied science as their major in university (64%). Six were accepted to universities by their academic performance and four through the Preferred University Admission Policy by being finalists of international science fairs. The author then raised suggestions on promoting project-based learning, organizing high school science research programs, as well as administering the Outstanding Young Scientists Program, enacting laws on recommendation into universities and long-term follow-up on these talented youngsters. |
