英文摘要 | This novel mainly depicts Maggie’s five rebellions, each of which represents an oscillation from self-renunciation to self-fulifllment on each occasion. When she finds that she cannot get happiness from her rebellion, she returns to the protection of the family in order to get solace. From Freudian point of view, her rebellion is natural, because everyone has an instinct to seek for such pleasure as unrestrained by conventions. But from Bakhtin’s theory of dialogism, her fall is inevitable, because she only pays attention to herself to the neglect of others. Thus the subjectivity that she forms is self-centered or deformed, which does not make her life meaningful. George Eliot seems to use this novel to accuse the Victorian society of failing to provide a healthy environment for intellectual women to live in. Maggie is typical of the victims, who were censured and punished for their aspiring for intellectual achievement. |
