英文摘要 | This article comments on Peter K. Bol's This Culture of Ours: Intellectual Transitions in T'ang and Sung China. I agree wiht the intellectual and cultural history approach that Bol adopts in his book. I also credit him with the success in avoiding reducing the history of the T'ang and Sung intellectual-cultural changes into a narrative of the history of philosophy. However, I also find it imperative to question the way Pol treats the history of literature. First, the reach an adequate explanation of the T'ang-Sung intellectual and cultural transitions, can we really use the history of literature to replace the previously much exalted history of philosophy? Second, if we use the history of literature to explain the intellectual and cultural transitions of the T'ang-Sung, how are we still able to escribe the materialization of ideas through such historical processes as institutionalization, generalization, and customization? Third, the history of literature often focuses on the lives of the elite strata; as a result, people or phenomena that are left out by the history of literature will not be easily included as the proper subjects of intellectual history. |
