英文摘要 | Background: To assess the degree of familial resemblance for fasting serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels among a health check-up population in Taiwan. Methods: Fasting levels of serum cholesterol and triglycerides were measured in 2,344 subjects of 586 families participating in the Mei-Jou Health Screening program. Each family contributed exactly 4 members, i.e. father, mother, one son, and one daughter. All participants were free from coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and generally in good health. The degree of familial resemblance was measured using age-adjusted familial (spouse, parent-offspring, sibling) correlations and heritability. Results: The maximal heritability estimates were 37% and 20% for serum cholesterol and triglycerides, respectively. For cholesterol, the parent-offspring and sibling correlations were significantly higher than the spouse correlation, indicating that genetic factors are more important in the familial resemblance for serum cholesterol than the common environmental factors shared by family members. However, for triglycerides, neither the parent-offspring nor sibling correlations were higher than the spouse correlation, which would ordinarily suggest that familial environmental factors such as dietary habits or physical activity play a more important role in the familial resemblance of serum triglycerides than genes. Conclusions: The familial resemblance for serum cholesterol and triglycerides were moderate in a health check-up population in Taiwan. While the heritability for serum cholesterol is mainly due to genes, the familial resemblance for triglycerides appears to be predominantly explained by familial environmental factors. |
