英文摘要 | Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease with carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolic disorders, and which is accompanied by immune impairment. Our previous study demonstrated that oral administration of the Chinese herbal medicine Cordyceps alleviates fasting hyperglycemia. Recent evidence has shown that the extract of Cordyceps has immunoregulatory activity. Our objective was to investigate whether Cordyceps has biological activity in regulating the lymphocyte subsets in diabetes. Male Wistar rats were administered saline (CON group) or 50 mg/kg streptozotocin to induce diabetes (STZ and CS groups) via the tail vein. Two days later, rats in the CS group were intragastrically administered Cordyceps (1 g/day), and rats in the STZ and CON groups were administered deionized water. After two weeks, body weight, thymus weight, thymocyte number, and the percentages of total T and T helper cells in the thymus were significantly lower in the STZ and CS groups than in the CON group. The percentage of macrophages in the spleen was significantly greater in the STZ group than in the CS group. Using concanavalin A and lipopolysaccharide to stimulate the thymocytes and splenocytes, we found that there was no significant difference in cell proliferation among the three groups. In summary, our results demonstrate that STZ-induced diabetic rats had significantly decreased numbers and subsets of T cells in the thymus. However, oral administration of Cordyceps did not improve these changes. Based on the above results we suggest that oral administration of Cordyceps has no significant effect on lymphocyte subsets in STZ-induced diabetic rats. |
