英文摘要 | Two influential articles written by Jean I. Marsden and Susan J. Wolfson and published in 1989 and 1990 respectively, heave pre-dominated recent studies and publications on Mary Lamb’s prose tales adapted form fourteen of Shakespeare’s comedies and romances. No one can deny the contribution of Marsden and Wolfson, the two feminist critics who have successfully drawn the attention of modern critics to the status of Mary Lamb as a prominent woman-writer and her contribution to Tales from Shakespear (1807) and to the education of adolescent girls and young women in the early nineteenth century. But during the past ten years, Mary Lamb and her fourteen tales also suffer from serious misinterpretation and misunderstanding, due to the many prejudices voiced in Marsden’t and Wolfson’s criticisms. It is hoped that this article will function as a critical survey on both Marsden’s and Wolfson’s essays and, at the same time, present a truer picture about Mary Lamb’s tales from Shakespeare. It is certainly not possible to discuss all fourteen tales as written by Mary Lamb in great detail within the limit of a twenty-five-page article; therefore, the focus will be firmly placed on the flaws in the hypotheses and the research methods of Marsden and Wolfson, the search for the intended readers of Mary Lamb’s tales form Shakespeare, and the impact of her tales on her readers, intended or not. |
