|The literary activities between Chen Wen-shu and his female students in Bicheng Xianguan reflected the interaction between literates and female writers at Jiangnan area during Jiaqing-Daoguage period in Qing dynasty, and also reflected the cultural characteristics of this female group.
This paper firstly attempts to examine the composition of the female students in Bicheng Xianguan. Most of these female students were educated from good families in Jiangsu and Zhejiang. As having been the administrator in Jiangnan area for a long tiime, Chen Wen-shu built up intensive relations with his female students. Secondly, this paper attempts to explore the content and form of their literary activities. Their poems and letters could indicate the characteristics of their activities. Finally, this paper attempts to discuss the humanistic characteristics of their activities and to explore the culture and social meaning of their activities from the geographic connection, family background, and educational condition. Besides, this study attempts to confirm Chen Wen-shu's impacts and contribution to the history of female literature in Qing dynastry.
