英文摘要 | This paper begins with a general discussion on teaching English metaphoric expressions. It recognizes the importance of metaphor in English learning. Since metaphor has been a subject of long-standing controversy, many scholars enunciated their theories on metaphor without giving a formal account of what a metaphor is. Their information about the nature of metaphor does not seem completely suitable for EFL teachers. Therefore, this paper specifically aims to explore the integral features of English metaphoric expressions from the viewpoint of language teaching. It is noted that a metaphoric expression is the product of conceiving or presenting one thing in terms of another. And a metaphoric expression is characterized by the author as a syntactically acceptable piece or stretch of language of which at least one constituent cannot be taken literally and of which the intended meaning as a whole is based on analogy. Three integral features of metaphor are thus identified and elaborated, namely, syntactic acceptability, nonliterality, and analogy. Finally, English metaphoric expressions are further distinguished form other figures of speech. |
