英文摘要 | Wang Kuo-wei utilizes Schopenhaurer's hilosophical viewpoints to interpret Chinese novels in his famous book commentaries on The Deream of the Red Chamber. This revolutionary approach to literary criticism had never been seen before in Chinese literary criticism, much less in research on this famous literary work. However, most critics of Wang doubt that he really understood Western philosophy and consider his commentaries to be unconvincing. To reevaluate Wang's Commentaries, this paper first looks into Wang's background. Surprisingly, despite the short amount of time that Wang spent on studying Western thought, he does seem to understand Western philosophy quite well, both in depth and scope. Second, after carefully analyzing his use of Schopenhauer's thought to interpret the Dream of the Red Chamber, we find that Wang did not stray far from Schopenhauer's thought at all. Wang only discussed the novel's main theme and ideology and didn't provide deep discussion on characterization. He did point out how Buddhism influenced both Schopenhauer and the work itself. Third, as in Wang's conclusion, we can see that tragedy is what made it a classic in Chinese literature. |
