英文摘要 | In this paper, the author examines why Yen fuh selected Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations for translation into Chinese, and assesses the value of two rare historical sources in the collection of the Normal University of East China. One is the first two sections of Yuan Fu, the Chinese version of The Wealth of Nations, proofread and corrected by Yen Fuh with red calligraphy; the other is an English edition of The Wealth of Nations with margin notes by Yen Fuh. Based on study of the latter work, the author describes the translation process, and determines that Yen Fuh coarried out this project between October 1896 and January 31, 1901. The author then proceeds to compare Yuan Fu with the original English edition of The Wealth of Nations, pointing out differences between the two works in such areas as organization, content and length, Yen Fuh not only wrote approximately 80 thousand Chinese characters of commentary alongside the translated text, protions of which are indistinguishable from the original text, but also deleted portions of the Wealth of Nations during the translation process. Thus, Yuan Fu can be considered an abridged translation of The Wealth of Nations only to a certain degree. Finally, the author examines Yuan Fu from a historical perspective, discussing its influence on late-Qing intellectuals and importance in the dissemination of Western learning, and giving a historical account of Yen Fuh's economic proposals. In explaining Yen Fuh's motivation in translating The Wealth of Nations and evaluating the influence of Yuan Fu on modern China, the author presents ideas different from those of previous scholarly works. |
