英文摘要 | The purpose of the present experiment is to induce mutations which resistant the blast disease of rice, and thus to find a shot way to establish resistant varieties without hybridization. Seeds of a representative "Ponlai" variety (Japonica type), Taichung No. 65 were treated with X-rays (20,000γ to 25,000γ), gamma rays from Co 60 source (11,000γ) and thermal neutron (15 hours and 20 hours), seperately. A number of plants were taken at random from the first generation populations, and they were kept in bulk up to the second generation (X-ray and neutron treated plots), or in pedigrees up to the fourth generation (gamma ray treated plots). During these generations, no particular selection was made. In the first crop of 1958, they were tested in an experimental plot at Tonshu, Taichung prefecture, where blast disease prevails, and resistant plants were selected. In the second crop, in addition to these selected, a number of strains taken from the irradiation populations were tested again at Tonshu. The degree of resistance was graded into 12 classes according to the ratio of infected portion to the total leaf area. The variety Taichung No. 65 is a susceptible one, ranging from 8.5 to 9.0 in the index-number for resistance. The irradiated strains showed were apparently wider range of resistance, variance being three to fifteen times as large as that of untreated strains. Thus a part of irradiated materials were found to be resistant against blast disease. The results of selection made in the first crop showed further that the variation in resistance due to irradiations was heritable. In view of these experimental results, radiation seems to be a useful method of breeding resistant strains against blast disease. |
