英文摘要 | In a language achievement test, are there items disadvantageous to male or female students because their content contains sex difference related activities? For example, female students do not like ice-hockey and despite their similar ability to males, females may still perform much worse. In the present study, we used two methods (SIBTEST and IRT-LR) to examine whether any of the 39 items in an actual Chinese vocabulary test showed this kind of sex difference (sex differential item functioning, DIF). In two groups of Junior Secondary Three (N=1608) students, it was found that seven items were of uniform DIF type (different difficulty only), while two showed non-uniform DIF (different discrimination and difficulty). The percentage of agreement between the two groups of students were 74% and 87% (α=.05) in SIBTEST and IRT-LR methods respectively. The percentage of agreement of the two methods with the same subjects was reasonably high 90% (α=.05). The possible reasons leading to DIF and ways of handling these items in the Chinese vocabulary test were also discussed. |
