中文摘要 | 自鴉片戰爭以後,清廷迫於列強侵逼,不得不開放門戶與西方交接,因而造成中的西化。而第一批派外國的使節,更代表中國傳統文化與西方文的正式接觸,直接影響中國對西方文化的接受。所以他們對西方文化的反應,值得深入研究。光緒元年(1875)以來駐外使館陸續設立,駐外人員在身履目擊之後,其思想是否有所轉變?轉變的程度有多大?對西方文化的認識屬於器物、制度或思想層次?這些都是值得探討的問題。 清季首任駐英副使、駐德公使劉錫鴻,出國前思想保守,謂「夷狄之道未可施諸中國」,出使後經反覆驗證,雖然修正一些原有的錯誤和偏見,承認「誠未可以匈奴、回紇待之(西洋各國)矣」,但是仍堅持西法不能行於中國。他對西方文化的知也僅止於器物層次而已。本文以劉錫鴻駐歐一年餘所寫的《英軺私記》一書,及其出國前後所上的奏摺為本,探究討論其對西方的認識。 |
英文摘要 | After the Opium War the Ching court was forced to open up its doors and establish contact with the west marking [the beginning of] the [modern era] westernization of China. The first Chinese envoys sent abroad, beginning in 1875, represent the [first] formal contact between traditional Chinese and western cultures. As these envoys directly influenced how the Chinese would accept foreign cultures it is important to study the envoy’s reactions and responses to western cultures. How did the thoughts of these envoys change after personally experiencing [western cultures]? And to what extend did their opinions change? Was their understanding of western cultures limited to material objects or implements, or to institutions, or to intellectualism? These questions are extremely important topics of discussion. When Liu His-Hung, the first deputy ambassador to England and the ambassador to Germany, first left China, his thinking was very conservative. He said, “The ways of the barbarians are not suitable for the Chinese.” Yet after his experiences as an ambassador abroad, he changed and corrected some of his mistaken ideas or stereotypes. He admitted, “You cannot compare [these western countries] with those [barbarian countries] of Hsu-Nu and Hui-He [neighboring China].” Yet his knowledge and understanding of the west was limited to material objects and still held steadfastly to his opinion that western methods would not work in China. The present study will focus on Liu His-Hung’s understanding of the west through his memoirs, “Ying-yao jih-chi(英軺私記)” written over one year, as well as through comparing and contrasting his thinking before and after he left China. |
