英文摘要 | The 30s was the golden age for left-wing political movements in China. "Thunder Storm", written in the early period of the decade, reflects the sociopolitical Background and is emblazoned by the spirit of the era. Between the lines of the play, one can easily detect the fledgling ideology of class struggle the necessary and legitimized struggle against the feudal system that exploited the workers who were uninitiated by the power of organization. Nevertheless, Cao Yu went beyond the restricted scope of social play. He attempted to argue the meaning of existence through the discussion of human destiny. Thus "Thunder Storm" has a deep philosophical connotation for existentialism, represented in the form of drama. Cao questioned the supernatural "heaven", and put the blame on feudalism and the exploitation of capitialist sysem for social tragedy. He went further to discuss the limitation and paranoia of human beings. By debating the relationship between man and the super-nature, man and the society, and the limitation of human, Cao's work and thoughts touched the scope morality, society, and the universe. The ambition and the search for self-idenity in arts created an achievement unparalleled in the history of Chinese modern theater. Cao Yu's introvert and somber personality as well as his gifts as a playwright, led him to become a deep observer and thinker of humanity. His keen observance of human nature and the acute description of human evil were a double-edged sword that cut right through the core, a rare achievement among Chinese writers. |
