| 英文摘要 | Venezuelan journal El Cojo Ilustrado was published semimonthly in Caracas from 1892 to 1915, and was collected in twenty four volumes under the direction of J. M. Herrera Irigoyen. It was, according to G. A. Otero, the best documentary source of Venezuelan social, economic, and political life at that time. (Carter, 97) This journal provides a useful touchstone for exploring the role and conduct of Venezuelan women during the period in which Teresa de la Parra grew up and was educated. Articles from El Cojo Ilustrado about womanhood were all written by male authors. Since very few articles by women can be found in this influential journal, we can assume that Venezuelan periodicals were a male-dominated sphere of influence. However, this journal has abundant artistic photographs of females which reflect both the gender of the readership and the journal's catering to male readers' sensual pleasure. These articles about women demonstrate that, from the nineteenth to the early twentieth century, the Venezuelan masculine ideology about women's conduct in Venezuela espoused their domestic role, as well as their virtue and beauty. |
