英文摘要 | This study examined the associations between conflict behavior of Taiwanese parents and their adult children's attitudes toward marriage and divorce, emotional security, and fear of intimacy. After those subjects who tended to engage in impression management were eliminated, 285 Taiwanese college students remained in the following analyses. Taiwanese students' perceptions of parental conflict styles (i.e., integrative communication, emotional and physical aggression, and avoidance) were measured by a newly-created instrument, based on the Conflict Tactics Scale (Straus, 1979). The results showed as follows: l.perceived parental integrative communication were significantly associated with adult children's positive attitudes toward marriage. 2.Perceived emotional aggression of fathers was the only destructive conflict style that had a significantly positive association with adult children's attitudes toward divorce. 3.Perceived conflict avoidance of fathers had a significantly positive association with adult children's attitudes toward marriage and a significantly negative association with their attitudes toward divorce. 4.Perceived parental usage of physical aggression was not related to any adult children's outcomes in this study. 5.No significant associations were found between perceived conflict behavior of parents and adult children's emotional security and fear of intimacy. However, Taiwanese subjects who had had romantic experiences or were currently dating had higher levels of emotional security and less fear of intimacy than those who had never been involved in a romantic relationship. Adult children seem to draw upon different experiences in relationships when they think about marriage versus when they think about romantic relations. |
