英文摘要 | Population migration is very much part of China's history. Due to war, famine poverty or commerce' many Chinese in Southern China migrated to Southeast Asia as early as 14th century. Large amount of Chinese overseas migration did not begin until mid-nineteenth century when gold was discovered in California and shortage of labor had occurred due to market expansion of Western capitalism. Chinese migrants experienced different degrees of racial discrimination and violence against them in their residing countries. Chinese cultural heritage and tradition are maintained through the formation of Chinatowns, ethnic communities or voluntary mutual assistance associations, however. Lower in crime rate, they thrive at commerce, social and even political activities. The strong social control mechanism implicit in Chinese culture and Confucianism may be an important explanatory factor. Confucianism is said to be one of earliest forms of Control Theory as well as theory of social political order. A comparison between Control Theory, as explicated by Gottfredson and Hirschi (1990,1994)' and Confucianism is made in this paper. Furthermore, to verify hypotheses derived from this paper, results from two empirical studies are used to demonstrate that there are ethnic disparities in crime, and it is those who lost social control from family or education that are more likely to commit crime. |
