英文摘要 | Party identification is one of the most important determinants in voting behavior. The balance of power of political parties is greatly influenced by the stability or shifts of party identification among the electorate. Various studies have found that family socialization through parental transmission is the most important factor in the formation of party identification among the American electorate. Due to different political histories, party identification among Taiwan's electorate, as many local studies revealed, is largely based on social divisions, including democratic attitudes, ethnic identities, and national identities. In the last decade, however, the political environment in Taiwan has changed dramatically. As these divisions disappear, what impact will this change have on party identification? This paper tries to answer this question by analysis of data from a nationwide survey. It found that contrary to popular belief, young voters (aged 19-30) are no less inclined to uphold a party identification than their elders. Second, as we have speculated, there is no difference in ideological dispositions between young supporters of the ruling Kuomintang and those of the opposing Democratic Progressive Party, although ideologies continue to be the dividing line for supporters of the two parties among elders. Finally, and most importantly, it found that parental transmission is the sole significant factor explaining the formation of party identification among young voters. As ideological divisions disappear from Taiwan's politics, the family becomes the most important arena of political socialization. |
