英文摘要 | Previous literature on code-mixing (hereafter, CM) or code-switching (hereafter, CS) across languages provided information about the variety and nature of code alternations. Nevertheless, some issues are worth further exploration. This paper addresses the significant difference between CS and CM. Data for this paper were taken from the CM between Chinese (specifically referred to Mandarin) and English in Taiwan. The paper is essentially a study responsive to the claim that CM involves only one grammar, whereas CS, as many grammars as the languages the speakers could command (Bokamba 1989). We shall in this paper argue that while a code-switcher must also be a code-mixer, but not vice versa. The arguments given are as follows: (a) Given that the Chinese-English code-mixers fail to speak English as fluently as English native speakers, they are thus not to fully obtain the English grammatical system in their linguistic competence.
