英文摘要 | This paper describes the design and implementation of the Computing Power Regulator (CPR), a Microsoft Windows NT/95 utility, to provide Windows NT/95 with a soft real-time personality. Distinct from the past work [12,13,14,15,16], CPR makes no modifications to the operating system and application programs. We propose a system model based on a large granularity of time reservation and a flexible control mechanism suitable to applications running on commercial operating systems. The performance of CPR was verified by a collection of simulation experiments of randomly generated and realistic workloads. CPR not only introduces very low system overheads but also largely reduces the phenomenon of non-timely resource allocation for applications. The experimental results also demonstrate the capability and flexibility of CPR in multiplexing CPU cycles to provide different degrees of quality-of-service to time-critical applications. This work not only demonstrates the strengths of the time reservation concep [12,13,14,15,16] in servicing time-critical applications but also presents a low-cost software solution to transform an ordinary operating system into a soft real-time operating system. |
