英文摘要 | A two-phase door-to door prevalence survey of major neurological disorders among middle and old age residents was conducted in five township of Ilan county from Jan 1, 1993 to May 31, 1995. A total of 10,058 residents aged above or equal to forty years old were screened. Of those screened persons, 2,385 were suspected to have one or more disorders of interest. In all the screened positive persons, 1,196 were examined personally by survey neurologists, 432 were confirmed by a neurologist on telephone interview 33 were confirmed by reviewing medical records, and 4 were missed. For improving the diagnostic accuracy, disease data bank files of two regional hospitals were linked to the master data files of this survey. There were 32 cases diagnosed to have active seizure disorders from the field survey. Additional 1 case was found in the disease data bank files in the 2 general hospitals. Of all the 33 cases, 8 were with acute symptomatic seizure and 25 with active epilepsy. The overall prevalence rate of active epilepsy was 249/100,000, with age-specific rates of 359/100,000, 380/100,000,164/100,000 106/100,000 and 239/100,000 for the age groups 40-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65-74, and 75 years or more respectively. The prevalence was higher in males (282/100,000) than that in females (216/100,000). The first three common causes of active epilepsy were head injury, idiopathic and stroke. The commonest cause(s) was head injury (42.9%) in males; stroke (27.3%) and idiopathic (27.3%) in females. |
