中文摘要 | 卡萊爾研究上有一個根深蒂固的模式:「卡萊爾的憂傷與改變」的模式( the formula of Carlyle's sorrow and conversion ). |
英文摘要 | There is a formula in explaining young Carlyle's intellectual and moral development. Scholars have accepted that Carlyle experienced a profound loss of faith during his university years, and that he was unable to sustain the total commitment to Calvinism that had characterized his upbringing. Therefore, he had to abandon the ministry. Then, Carlyle suffered from ill health and frustrated hopes of work, and lapsed into deep depression until German thought recon firmed his previous belief and emancipated him. Sartor Resartus is always the most important source in understanding Carlyle's inner development, in spite of Carlyle's repeated warning about the myth of it. Therefore, scholars obsess the formula and confuse myth with fact. In order to clarify the episodes, it is essential to inquire Carlyle's intellectual and moral development during the period of Edinburgh University (1809-1821). Did Carlyle really lose his faith during this period? What was really the nature of his sorrow then? What was his conversion? When tackling these questions, Carlyle's letters of this period, not Sartor Resartus, is essential. The extent of Carlyle's correspondence of this period is abundant. We can find a lot of real and direct sources in them so that we can break the myth, discard the formula, and build the historical fact. |
