英文摘要 | There were two streams of equal-wealth ideas in ancient China: the Mo Tzu stream urged for equal wealth without status differentiation, whilst the Confucius stream proposed that with status differentiation (有等級區分的均富思想). It is even more interesting that most scholars in Chinese history on equal wealth elaborated their ideas along the Confucian line. This paper will show how Chinese economic institutions reflect such main stream equal-wealth ideas and how these concepts and institutions constituted through a long-term historical process a crucial part of Taiwanese life, mostly unconsciously felt by Taiwanese. Dates for the emergence of these institutions in Chinese history and for their transplanting to Taiwan reveals the deep Chinese cultural roots in Taiwan. The interplay of state power and market forces will be discussed to illustrate Taiwan's great emphasis on agriculture throughout its 400-year history since the influx of Chinese from the mainland to Taiwan around 1600. It will explain Taiwan's realization of Chinese core concepts of equal wealth with status differentiation in contrast with other Chinese societies. Taiwan's strong heritage and fertilization of grass-root vitality reveals an important aspect of Chinese culture contrary to the totalitarian element emphasized by many other scholars. The concept and institutions for equal wealth with status differentiation will turn into Taiwanese consciousness after contact with societies with more class flavour. |
